Ohio voters can fix a broken, politically bias redistricting system by supporting State Issue 2 on Nov. 6.
If approved, the proposed constitutional amendment would bring equity and balance to the state legislative and congressional redistricting process by removing the power from politicians and lobbyists and putting it in the hands of citizens.
District maps are redrawn every 10 years after the federal census. Under the current system the majority political party in office controls the process.
State Issue 2 establishes a politically independent citizens commission to redraw the maps and also requires the now closed-door process to be open to public scrutiny.
For more than 30 years, members of the LWV have worked to fix the flawed process. Now, partnering with Voters First and 30 Ohio organizations, we seek voter support for State Issue 2 which adds fairness and compactness among other criteria for redrawing the political districts.
Upon request, the League of Women Voters of Delaware County will provide speakers to discuss the details of Issue 2. Such information helps voters make decisions on Election Day.
